Project duration: July 2023 - June 2024

Following our joint project with ARC Foundation in 2021, where we became aware of the absence of relevant Country of Origin Information (COI) about children and young people, and simultaneously, the low awareness of child-specific issues in the immigration and asylum legal sector. In response, we co-developed a handbook and training module to assist researchers focusing on COI for children and young people.

To further address these information gaps, Asylos has recently launched a project that intends to address information gaps about children and young people who are seeking international protection and aimed at adding to our current thematic Principles.

As a consequence, we implemented the following activities:

  1. Produced a country report on the situation of children and young people in Sudan, combining interviews with individuals with authoritative knowledge on the topic alongside excerpts from country information available in the public domain;

  2. Developed a principles document to share key research insights;

  3. Developed a training handbook and delivered a series of complementary training webinars to guide those conducting Country of Origin Information research on child-related issues. (Originally co-developed with ARC Foundation in 2021 and now updated by Asylos and forthcoming).

On 17 June 2024, we launched the project with a roundtable event, where we presented the publications, our Country of Origin Information report Sudan: Children and Young People and Principles Document

We discussed the main findings on the situation of children and young people in Sudan, and reflected on our Principles for Conducting COI research on child-specific COI. We also reviewed the legal background of children’s claims for international protection in the UK, and discussed what this means for conducting child-focused COI. Furthermore, we also briefly presented our Snapshot report on the COI for Children and Young People in Rwanda; A snapshot of Access to Rights and Services.
